After a short briefing vehicles on safety and trail protocol, vehicles will leave The Hacienda at 09:00 in convoy and go to the Valley Viewpoint where the “sleeping giant” can be seen on a clear day. Should this not be possible, we will proceed to the Valley entrance. Thereafter, we drop down into the Valley of a Thousand Hills. After about 5kms on mainly tar road (D1004) we drop off onto the Sikelekehleni Riverine 4×4 Trail (Grade 1 – 3) where we pass below the Sithumba Primary School mainly on dirt roads, bush track and quarries where sand mining takes place. The trail crosses the river a number of times before reaching the Umgeni River. The trail then proceeds along the banks of the Umgeni River for about a kilometer before climbing out on a dirt road/track. There will be ample opportunity for guests to take photo’s and do some bird watching along the way. This route can take up to three hours to complete.
A quick stop at Mafula Store for some quick refreshments before proceeding to the Mafula Picnic Spot, managed and maintained by Durban Green Corridor trained guide. Guests will have an opportunity to swim in the Mqeku River pools and enjoy a braai here. Please bring your own picnic lunch, braai meat and drinks. The trip home will be along dirt and tar roads back to The Hacienda and this normally takes about 40 minutes.
Your tour leader will be Jacques Malan who has many years experience in the valley. Tours are scheduled for specific days and booking essential
