Nowhere in South Africa is there a natural system quite like that of Durban and KwaZulu Natal. (link to destination page) Our valleys, rivers and beaches are signature features of this coastal province and are vital assets that many depend on for sustained livelihood and business.
This system acts as a place-maker, with its distinct characteristics helping to define our identity on the world stage. We must celebrate, protect and promote these spaces, recognizing their significant role as the socio-economic base of the province.
Many of our communities find themselves living between the edges of the built environment and often-stressed natural open spaces. Rather than being community assets worth protecting, these green lungs become the thorn in the community’s side, with anti-social behaviour, poor environmental management and illegal activity draining socio-economic, civic, and ecological value.
Our public open spaces are where we connect with ourselves and with one another.
KwaZulu Natal’s rich natural landscape and cultural heritage are the perfect platforms for growing young explorers; centering enquiring minds; inspiring the adventurer and reigniting the ‘wild’ within us. Through our sport; cultural and exploration programmes (link to purpose projects), the value of these space becomes tangible.
Managing mounting pressures on open spaces and eco-systems to sustain population growth and increased recreational use; respond to climate change and ecological health, and to offer economic value, requires consistent innovation with significant investment.
Through collaboration across the public and private sectors, we identify, package, and sell the potential of open spaces to align with investors’ triple-bottom-line.
By employing a layered partnership structure, we look to ensure the sustained involvement of multiple stakeholders in any given area. This ensures we can survive the cyclical nature of commercial sponsorships and campaigns.
