Request for Quotations – Agro-Ecology Garden Design and Development Services

Green Corridors NPC is partnered with the eThekwini Municipality’s Economic Development Unit and Agro-Ecology Unit in implementing the Green Bremen West to KwaMashu project in a joint initiative between the City of Bremen, Germany and eThekwini Municipality that is implemented and driven by eThekwini’s Economic Development Unit. The project aims to implement measures in eThekwini for the development and management of urban green infrastructure to support climate change adaptation and environmental, social and economic sustainability and development.

A key project component is redesigning and upgrading a 7-hectare urban food garden in the Piesang River floodplain in Kwamashu. Green Corridors and the Municipality will use the lessons learned from upgrading this garden to support the improvement of other township based urban agriculture sites.

Expert services are required to redesign this site as a productive agroecology food garden, which will also be used for environmental education purposes.

Key responsibilities will include:

  1. Developing concept garden design plans, including landscaping, layout, water supply, measures for soil and biodiversity enhancement, access by users and visitors, storage space for tools, and perimeter hard and vegetative fencing
  2. Use, align and link the garden design process with building the capacity of the garden beneficiaries, including through their participation in garden layout design and planning processes
  3. Support and advisory services for implementation of garden design plans and subsequent installation of infrastructure
  4. Preparation of a draft project implementation plan for the garden layout design and capacity building of the beneficiaries and relevant recommendations 

The ideal candidate/company should have the following competencies:

  • Proven experience in garden design at a scale of 2 ha or more that applies biological management principles
  • More than 8 years working experience in the agroecology/permaculture farming design space
  • Thorough knowledge of biological management principles and technologies and applying these to food garden design and productive, regenerative garden development
  • Good writing skills
  • Basic draughting skills, to enable formal technical survey and draughting
  • Good communication skills and the ability to contribute to effective garden management by beneficiaries
  • The garden design team should be restricted to a maximum number of 1-2

In addition, candidates should be prepared to undertake a maximum number of 4 site visits and participate in virtual meetings with the Project Management Team as and when required.
